Castle’s Cadwell Weekend

After a long drive up to Cadwell Park I was met by the BC Racing team. I had never been to Cadwell before and wasn’t sure what to expect. My initial impressions were that it was going to be very difficult to put on a show. The corners were narrow, quite small and the barriers were very close. When I walked round the track with some of the other drivers, I felt a bit happier with the track. I could see that there would be some awesome photos come out of it as there were lots of trees and the scenery was good… much like a forest rally section.

On the Saturday practice things went really well. I was surprised at how much fun the track was to drive. I felt comfortable with it straight away. Everyone really enjoyed the new challenge and the practice session ended with everyone being on a high. That night I was supposed to camp. I had every intention- my tent and sleeping bag were in the boot. Then I came to my senses and went to a local hotel and got a good nights sleep instead!

Mind Now on Snetterton for Cameron

As a first visit to Cadwell Park it was hard to picture where we were going to run a fast and challenging course. One run on the Saturday practice put those worries to bed straight away! A complete departure to what we run at all the other courses , Cadwell offered a real challenge of crests, blind corners and not a lot of run-off… as I would find out Sunday!

Saturday practice showed the apexv8.com s14a was perfect for the track with it’s on-tap torque to deal with all the flicks , dips and turns of the section we were using,  managing to run the entire track flatout in 3rd gear despite the narrowness. All was looking good for Sunday as the car completed practice faultlessly.

Declan Hicks In Depth On Round 4

Cadwell Park was never going to be an easy circuit. It’s tight, blind crested and twisty with almost no run-off. Mistakes were going to be punished with at least a few weeks work in the bodyshop if you got it wrong. Still, it was going to be a challenge and it looked like a potentially interesting succession of bends to contend with… especially considering this my was my first time drifting at the circuit with a car that’s wider on opposite lock than the circuit is wide in several places.

However upon arrival on the Saturday for practice everything became clearer. All those thoughts of potential hard labour were banished once I’d driven the section we were going to be using. It was awesome, so much fun to drive and pretty much flat out in 3rd all the way. First corner is a cambered right hander, then a transition through the dipping left, a right hander over the blind crest, cresting left with a lift at the end and a downchange mid drift into  2nd for the last 90 degree bend. I’d forgotten about the “getting it all wrong worries” and cracked on with nailing some blinding runs. True, there is no for room for error, on my 3rd run I left a faint mark on the rear bumper’s corner when I literally kissed the Armco. I didn’t even know I’d done it until the marshall who normally stands a foot the other side came up to me later and said “that was close!”. Note to self: Remember the car is nearly 16ft long for the future!

Andy Cooper on Round 4

Only 20 miles from the east coast of England near Grimsby, Cadwell Park isn’t as centrally located as the other large circuits – a straight run across the country from Liverpool where we got the overnight ferry from Belfast.  It is also particularly narrow, with the section we were using through a set of trees more like a rally stage, with the spectators being right beside the action. The tight, twisty off camber set of four corners we were using didn’t seem daunting… until fellow drifter Kieran Cameron returned from his first practice lap minus half the front end of the Apex V8 Nissan S14!
